I get asked this question time and time again by my clients. Some do it in a judgemental and condescending manner. I believe they do this to make themselves feel above such a "seedy" existence, and so I don't take it personally. Being paid so generously for the small nugget of time I have to spend with such people, I am able to take their hypocritical criticism "on the cheek."
Others, ask because they genuinely care for me. Which is nice in a way. However I generally do not give deep and truthful explanations to these guys. More often or not they don't care for me as a friend, but more as a potential partner, which can potentially get tricky. (i.e pursuing me outwith "working hours.")
Lastly there are the clients who are simply curious, like perhaps you might be. I don't mind answering the question in this instance!
The truth is fairly disappointing to sympathetic and judgemental clients alike. I am not desperately trying to fund a "drug habit," and nor am I simply doing it to survive or make ends meet. There are no dramatic circumstances to discuss...
I simply enjoy money. I love money and everything it brings. Being a student there is not really any other ways of making decent money, and I don't fancy endless shifts in the supermarket for £6 an hour)
The clients get laid and I get paid, everyone is happy! Well its not always that simple, there are some downsides and potential dangers too. I wont complain too much though, most of the time my job is pretty fun!
